Atlanta Petanque League won it’s second consecutive Club Cup Challenge two weeks ago in Asheville, NC with a solid showing from top to bottom. The format for the tournament was mixed triples with 8 APL teams playing 8 AVL teams 1 time each. Winning teams would earn 1 point for their respective clubs and point differentials were kept in case of a tie.
The Challenge was hosted this year by AVL at locally renown French Restaurant Rendezvous. Rendezvous has 8 very challenging, very fast but consistent courts that favors pointing over shooting. In the first APL vs. AVL challenge APL took the trophy by a very slim 1 game margin, however, this year APL widened that margin to 10 games. The APL team of Frosty Sabo, Joyce Keeton and Jacqueline Vergez led the way with 6 overall wins, followed by the team of Kevin Tull, Pascale Galinier and Yvonne Law also with 6 wins. Eric Nicolas, Thomas and Abby Brettschneider had a very strong showing with 5 wins and rounding out the top 4 with 5 wins was the team of Andrew Rausch, Jay and Jennifer Williamson. The scoreboard might be a little deceiving as the AVL teams put up a strong fight with several of our match victories coming by just 1 point.
The competition was fierce but the weekend was highlighted by the wonderful hospitality and comradery of the Asheville club. Everyone was very welcoming and it was a great chance to spend some time getting to know them a little bit better, enjoy some rosé and have some fun which is the real reason why we play this game. Looking forward to next year, we cannot rest on our laurels, so get out there and play some Petanque so we can make it 3 in a row!
